Manufacturing process

In contrast to the standard carbon rim manufacturing process where a rim is composed of up to six distinct segments of carbon fiber, our continuous tangent layup (CTL) process results in just a single length of UD carbon fiber around the entire rim circumference. There are no individual segments and thus not gaps in the layup and no overlaps.

The CTL process also ensures as its name says, that the fibers are always aligned correctly along the rim,

A special tool set ensures that the manual layup occurs outside of the mold and that the layup engineers cannot deviate from the layup pattern.

Key Benefits of CTL over Traditional Manual Layup



Better uniformity

CTL utilizes a custom made tool set to lay up the carbon fiber layers outside of the rim mold, around a solid mandrel. This allows us to lay up the entire rim in one piece, without needing to cut the carbon fiber into individual patches.

One piece layup

Because CTL layup consistes of single pieces of UD fabric there are no overlaps, no misalignment and no breaks or cuts in the carbon fiber. The benefits of this are decreased weight and increased strength of the rims.

Perfect finish quality

The layup is perfectly formed outside of the rim thus there is no possibility of presence of bubbles or wrinkles that can occur when carbon fiber is laid up inside the mold, as is the case with other manual layup rims.

Unique

CTL process results in unique looking carbon rims as there are no visible joints or segments. In fact they appear to be painted except for the fact that the UD carbon fiber surface is clearly visible.
